Barriers International has introduced more safety features for fencing and barrier products in the sporting world than any other manufacturer.
Over the last three decades, we have designed and produced an extensive range of specialist PVC sports fencing, crowd barrier systems and safety products for the global sporting industry.
Back in 1989 we designed a running rail system for horse racing that could be installed without any extra internal support; in particular, no metal above ground level making it a safer choice for both jockey and rider.
We followed this in 1992 by introducing the twin rail course division for horse racing, supported on a single post, followed by being the first sports barrier manufacturer to introduce an access option using sliding rails.
We led the way in introducing multiple offset rail systems in 1995; the system is designed to deter horses from attempting to jump over standard height Running Rails in areas where there might be a danger on the other side. It is true to say, we are always keeping safety in mind.
As we entered the new millennium, we were the first to introduce PVC Athletic Track kerb systems for Athletic stadiums, gaining IAAF approval. Our system is robust, unlikely to be vandalised, provides flexibility, is easily visible, will not discolour, reflects heat and takes seconds to remove or replace securely during competitions. You may have spotted them in use at Alexander Stadium during this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Also in 2000, Barriers International was the first to bring plastic rails to Greyhound racing and we now supply nearly every greyhound track in the UK. Track professionals say that one important advantage of our racing rail is the vastly improved sight line it gives the dogs which means fewer collisions in the bends.
Robin Seel, our Managing Director, introduced the Frangible fence pin as a safety feature to the sport of Eventing in 2001. This has been developed and is in use today at some of the best-known three-day events: Badminton, Blenheim and Gatcombe Horse Trials to name just a few.
We continued to invest in safety for sport, developing the Trot Racing Rail system in 2001. This was specially designed for Trot racing where two disciplines use the same track. This practice is often used at racecourses in France, and endorsed by France Galop as a result.
In Australia during 2005, we were the first to install a breakaway post system for running rails, making horseracing a safer workplace for Jockeys.
Most recently, in 2021 we introduced a contemporary style Post & Rail barrier, using round posts with 2, 3 or 4 oval lateral rails.
We are still ahead of the competition when it comes to offering our customers an economic solution for safer racing rails and crowd barrier systems.
